Old English blæc, from proto-Germanic *blak- (cf. Old Norse blakkr "dark", Dutch blaken "to burn"), from proto-Indo-European *bhleg- "burn, gleam" (cf. Greek phlegein "to burn, scorch", Latin flagrare "to blaze, glow, burn"). Same root produced Old English blac "white, bright" (cf. bleach), the common notion being "lack of hue". In Middle English it is often doubtful whether blac, blak, blake means 'black, dark', or 'pale, colourless, wan'.
